Product, batch or unit: know what you are checking
Three levels of code
- Product-level codes identify a product version. Every pack of that version carries the same code.
- Batch-level codes identify one production batch, so batch dates and batch recalls apply.
- Unit-level codes identify one serialised item and can show unusual activity on a single code.
Why the level matters
A product-level match tells you the product exists in the record. A unit-level match tells you that this particular code was issued and activated. Neither, on its own, proves the item in your hand is genuine, because codes can be copied.
The result page always states the level, so you know how far the record goes.
What to do with the result
Compare the item with the approved description and image. Read any notice. If something does not match, report a concern with the code and a photo.
